Video Doorbells Without Monthly Subscriptions: Understanding Your Options
'No subscription' covers several very different products. Knowing which category you are actually shopping in saves both money and disappointment.

In short
There are three broad ways to avoid a monthly doorbell fee: a camera doorbell that stores footage locally, a camera doorbell used on its free tier for live viewing only, or a visitor-initiated QR and NFC sign such as DoorVi that records nothing at all. They differ most in what happens after the visitor leaves.
Manufacturer plans, free-tier inclusions and prices change and vary by country. Check current terms with each manufacturer rather than relying on any comparison, including this one.
The categories
1. Camera doorbells with local storage
These record to a microSD card in the device or to a home hub on your network, so there is no cloud fee. You keep footage and full control of it. The trade-offs are that a stolen device can take the footage with it, capacity is finite, and remote access away from home can be less polished than a cloud service.
2. Camera doorbells used without a plan
Most cloud-based camera doorbells still function without paying: you get a live view when the button is pressed and two-way audio. What you generally lose is history โ if you missed the notification, there is nothing to go back to. This is a perfectly valid choice if you mainly want to see who is there in real time.
3. Visitor-initiated QR and NFC calling
A different model altogether. The sign at the door has no camera, battery or wiring. A visitor scans the QR code or taps the NFC tag, and a secure video call opens in their browser to your phone. There is no cloud storage, no detection engine and therefore nothing to charge a monthly fee for. DoorVi is in this category.

Choosing between them
- Need footage you can review later? Look at local-storage cameras first.
- Only ever watch live? A free-tier cloud camera may be enough โ but check what the free tier includes today.
- Cannot drill, wire or provide power? A QR and NFC sign is often the only option that fits.
- Want zero maintenance? A sign with no battery has nothing to fail.
- Main problem is missed deliveries rather than security? Visitor calling addresses that directly.
- Concerned about cameras in a shared entrance? A sign avoids the issue entirely.
Where DoorVi sits
DoorVi is a one-time purchase with no monthly subscription, no cloud storage and no account required by your visitors. It is the right answer when the problem is reaching and seeing the person at your door โ and the wrong answer if you need recorded evidence, which we would rather say plainly.
The range includes acrylic signs, stickers and instantly downloadable printable PDF signs, so the same approach scales from a single front door to a portfolio.
