Privacy: two different models
Camera doorbells continuously watch the area in front of your door and store clips, usually in the cloud. For many households that is exactly the point — it deters and it evidences. It also means footage of neighbours, passers-by and visitors exists, and in shared entrances that can raise real objections.
DoorVi inverts this. The sign has no camera and no microphone, so nothing is observed between calls and nothing is stored. A call happens only when a visitor deliberately starts one, and the video is one way: you see them, they do not see you or inside your home. Your phone number is never shown to the visitor.
Neither model is inherently correct. They serve different priorities.
Installation and ongoing effort
- DoorVi: clean the surface, press the sign on, register once from your phone. No drilling, no wiring, no charging and no firmware.
- Camera doorbells: fit the bracket, provide power by battery or wiring, connect to Wi-Fi, and thereafter recharge or maintain the device.
- In rented or leasehold property, adhesive mounting is often the only permitted option, which is where DoorVi has a practical advantage.
When a camera doorbell is the better choice
Be clear-eyed about this. If you want evidence of an incident, alerts when someone approaches while you are away, or a record of parcel deliveries, DoorVi cannot provide that — it records nothing. A camera doorbell is the appropriate product, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing.
When DoorVi is the better choice
- You cannot drill, wire or fit hardware — rented flats, leasehold buildings, listed properties.
- There is no power at the point where visitors arrive, such as a gate or outbuilding.
- You do not want a camera pointed at a shared hallway or a neighbour's door.
- You want zero maintenance: no charging, no firmware, no battery health.
- You want no recurring fee.
- Your main frustration is missed deliveries and unheard knocking rather than security footage.
Using both together
They are not mutually exclusive. A camera doorbell handles monitoring while a DoorVi sign gives couriers and visitors a direct line to you — useful in households where the doorbell is heard but never answered in time.
